Dog-Friendly Beaches & Walks

The best dog-friendly beaches & walks to enjoy across the Llŷn Peninsula

One of the greatest pleasures of holidaying on the Llŷn Peninsula is that you don't have to leave your four-legged companion behind.

With miles of coastline, peaceful countryside, woodland walks and spectacular beaches, it's the perfect destination for dogs who love exploring as much as their owners.

At Tyn y Big Estate, we're delighted to welcome up to five dogs, and with 10 acres of private gardens, fields and woodland surrounding the estate, adventures begin the moment you step outside.

Here are some of our favourite dog-friendly beaches and walks to enjoy during your stay.

Hell's Mouth (Porth Neigwl)Our Favourite

Perfect for: Long walks • Running • Ball games

Stretching for almost four miles, Hell's Mouth is one of the largest beaches in North Wales and one of our favourite places to take a dog.

There's plenty of space to roam, even during the busier months, while the dramatic cliffs and rolling countryside provide a spectacular backdrop for a leisurely stroll.

It's the perfect place for energetic dogs who enjoy long walks and plenty of room to explore.

Our tip: Visit early in the morning or later in the evening for the quietest experience and beautiful sunsets.

Morfa Nefyn

Perfect for: Families • Gentle walks • Swimming

Morfa Nefyn combines a wide sandy beach with calm waters and wonderful views across the bay.

The beach is ideal for relaxed walks before following the coastal path towards Porthdinllaen and the famous Ty Coch Inn.

It's one of those places where both dogs and owners seem instantly to unwind.

Porthdinllaen

Perfect for: Coastal walks • Lunch by the sea

Reached on foot from Morfa Nefyn, Porthdinllaen is one of the peninsula's most picturesque destinations. Dogs are welcome on the beach, and after your walk you can relax outside the Ty Coch Inn overlooking the water before making the gentle return journey.

It's one of our favourite days out on the peninsula.

Llanbedrog Beach

Perfect for: Woodland & beach combination

Llanbedrog offers the best of both worlds.

Start with the woodland walk up to the famous Tin Man sculpture before descending to the beach for a paddle in the sea.

The combination of shaded woodland and open coastline makes this a particularly enjoyable outing on warmer days.

Please note that seasonal restrictions apply to parts of the beach during the summer, so it's worth checking local signage before visiting.

Whistling Sands (Porthor)

Perfect for: Scenic walks • Exploring

Managed by the National Trust, Whistling Sands is famous for its unusual squeaking sand and crystal-clear water.

Outside seasonal restrictions, it's a wonderful place for dogs to stretch their legs while owners enjoy one of Wales' most beautiful beaches.

The surrounding cliffs also provide excellent walking opportunities.

Porth Ceiriad

Perfect for: Peace & quiet

Hidden beneath dramatic cliffs, Porth Ceiriad is one of the peninsula's quieter beaches.

The walk down adds to the sense of adventure, while the peaceful setting makes it ideal for dogs who prefer quieter surroundings away from busier resorts.

It's a favourite with walkers throughout the year.

Aberdaron Beach

Perfect for: Relaxed afternoons

The charming seaside village of Aberdaron offers a lovely sandy beach where dogs can enjoy the sea before you wander through the village for coffee or lunch. It's a relaxed place to spend several hours and combines beautifully with a walk towards Mynydd Mawr.

The Wales Coast Path

Perfect for: Every type of walker

The Wales Coast Path runs around much of the Llŷn Peninsula and offers countless opportunities to explore with your dog.

Whether you're looking for a gentle one-hour stroll or a longer day hike, you'll discover spectacular sea views, hidden coves and peaceful countryside along the way.

Our favourite section is the walk around Llanbedrog Headland.

Around Tyn y Big Estate

Perfect for: Morning and evening walks

Sometimes the best walks are the simplest.

Step outside Tyn y Big Estate and you'll find peaceful country lanes, nearby public footpaths and 10 acres of private gardens, fields and woodland to enjoy.

It's the perfect place for an early morning stroll before breakfast or an evening wander as the sun sets across the countryside.

Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park

Perfect for: Adventurous dogs

Less than an hour from the estate, Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park offers endless opportunities for adventurous walkers and energetic dogs.

From gentle lakeside walks to more challenging mountain routes, it's an unforgettable day out before returning to the comfort of Tyn y Big Estate.

Dog-Friendly Cafés & Pubs

After a good walk, both you and your dog deserve a well-earned rest.

Some of our favourite dog-friendly stops include:

  • The Ty Coch Inn, Porthdinllaen
  • Mickey's Beach Café, Llanbedrog
  • The Vaynol, Abersoch
  • Many cafés around Abersoch welcome dogs in their outdoor seating areas. It's always worth checking current policies before visiting, particularly during busy periods.

Our Dog Walking Tips

  • Check seasonal beach restrictions before setting out.
  • Keep dogs under control around livestock when walking in the countryside.
  • Bring fresh drinking water during warmer weather.
  • Rinse paws after beach walks to remove salt and sand.
  • Always carry waste bags and help keep the peninsula beautiful for everyone.
